The unveiling of the AMD Ryzen 9000 desktop CPU lineup with the new Zen 5 architecture showcases improvements in all aspects. However, AMD advertises the top-tier Ryzen 9 9950X as the “fastest consumer desktop performance in the world” compared to the Intel Core i9-14900K, yet they do not claim it to be the best for gaming performance.
Donny Woligroski, the AMD executive, clarified to Tom’s Hardware that the Ryzen 9 9950X will not outperform the Ryzen 7000X3D gaming CPU that features the innovative 3D V-Cache vertical cache technology released in 2023. Woligroski pointed out that even the lower-tier 7800X3D CPU from the 7000X3D series surpasses the 9700X, but not significantly. This is attributed to the Zen 5 architecture advancements, increasing instructions per clock (IPC) by 16% and faster L1/L2 cache speeds, bringing its performance closer to the X3D models.
Furthermore, Woligroski hinted that AMD will continue developing X3D series CPUs with exciting features to be revealed in the future.

TLDR: AMD introduces the Ryzen 9000 CPUs with Zen 5 architecture, promoting the Ryzen 9 9950X as the fastest desktop performance globally but not claiming top gaming performance. Woligroski confirms the 9950X won’t beat the Ryzen 7000X3D with 3D V-Cache technology, highlighting improvements in IPC and L1/L2 cache speeds. AMD plans to release more X3D CPUs with promising features ahead.
