The unveiling of the Google Pixel 9 last night confirmed that every device in the Pixel 9 series (Pixel 9, 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL, 9 Pro Fold) comes with the Android 14 operating system, as Android 15 wasn’t ready in time due to Google moving up the release of the Pixel 9 by 2 months.
According to 9to5google, the Pixel 9 series phones will be upgraded to Android 15 through a “Pixel Drop” update, but the timeframe for this update is still unspecified.
It is currently unclear how many generations the Pixel 9 will receive operating system upgrades for, as Google’s policy vaguely states “updates for up to 7 years,” which means if we follow the strict timeline, it would end at Android 21 by the end of the 7 years from the sale date (August 2031), and won’t be upgraded to Android 22, which would release just a few months later (if Google keeps using the traditional release model).
