There has been progress from the Epic Games case against Google regarding the tying of the store system on Android, with the court now in the process of considering penalties. Initially, Epic proposed what they wanted Google to do because this lawsuit does not include a claim for damages. However, Epic’s proposal has caused Google to respond that it is excessive and will have negative consequences for all parties.
Judge James Donato has not yet delivered a verdict but has instructed Google to calculate the total costs, including labor and economic costs, if they are to comply with Epic’s proposal on page 7.
Epic’s proposal on the aforementioned page requests that (1) Google must allow outside stores access to all app catalogs and libraries on the Play Store for 6 years, and (2) Google must allow the download of external stores through the Play Store for the same period of time.
Google is expected to provide all details to the court by June 24th or within a month from now before the court issues its next order. It is interesting to see whether the costs that Google calculates and submits to the court will be questioned by Epic for accuracy. Stay tuned for more updates.
