Customized Microsoft Teams Client for Virtual Desktop and Remote Desktop environments released by Microsoft.

Microsoft has released an update for the Microsoft Teams client, specifically designed for use on virtual desktops/remote desktops, to improve performance, especially during video calls.

The reason Teams needs a separate client for running on Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) is due to the processing method of virtual machines on VDI separating client-server functions (refer to the illustration). This necessitates a client specifically designed to work efficiently with the architecture of VDI.

This version of Microsoft Teams is an upgrade in line with the new Microsoft Teams engine slated for 2023 to enhance performance and reduce memory consumption. The significant change lies in the new media engine called SlimCore developed to replace the old video call system based on the WebRTC protocol.

The SlimCore engine will be another separate software from the Teams client, with Microsoft continuously updating it. The client side for Remote Desktop and Windows App (for use with Azure Virtual Desktops and Windows 365) by Microsoft, including Citrix clients, have been updated to support the SlimCore engine. VMware users can expect announcements in the near future.
