Social media platforms of China such as Tencent, Douyin, Kuaishou, Sina Weibo, Bilibili, and Xiaohongshu (similar to Instagram) have announced a ban on flaunting wealth. Following this announcement last week, numerous accounts with a large following have been banned.
Accounts that have been banned include wanghongquanxing on Douyin, run by Wang Hongquan, who showcases high-end jewelry to his 4 million followers, Bo Gongzi, who often flaunts Hermes bags and exchanges gifts with his boyfriend worth millions on Douyin to over 3 million followers, and Baoyu Jiajie, a 50-year-old glamorous woman who indulges in abalone and is known as Sister Abalone, with 2.3 million followers.
Weibo has stated that they have temporarily banned or suspended 27 accounts, deleted 1,110 posts, while Tencent has removed 21 mini programs, banned 36 accounts, and deleted 6,041 posts. Douyin has deleted 4,701 posts and managed 11 accounts.
The banned accounts are known for showcasing lavish lifestyles, large houses, expensive meals, and luxury branded clothing. Although this policy was announced by the platforms themselves, the simultaneous announcement by various platforms suggests a coordinated government policy.
