Decline in Revenue for Nintendo as Switch Sales Decrease by 46% from Previous Year’s Peak.

Nintendo reported its financial results for the quarter ending June 2024, with total revenue of 2.47 trillion yen, decreasing by 46.5% compared to the same period last year. Net profit also took a hit, dropping by 81 billion yen.

The Nintendo Switch console saw a modest increase in sales by 2.10 million units, a decrease of 46.3% across all models. The OLED variant experienced the most significant decline, dropping from 2.83 million units to 1.24 million units compared to the previous year. The total units of Nintendo Switch sold reached 143.42 million, with software sales totaling 30.64 million units in the quarter.

One factor contributing to the decline in sales from the previous year, according to Nintendo, is the lack of high-profile releases like The Super Mario Bros. Movie and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom that drove revenue in the same period last year. Additionally, the Nintendo Switch is now in its 8th year on the market.

Highlighted games from the past quarter include Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door selling 1.76 million units and Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD selling 1.19 million units. New releases for the quarter included Nintendo World Championship: NES Edition, Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club, and The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom.

Nintendo also provided updates on future plans, including the upcoming release of a new Super Mario movie on April 24, 2026, the Donkey Kong Country theme park zone at Universal Studio Japan set to open this year, and the Nintendo Museum in Kyoto scheduled to open by the end of the year.

TLDR: Nintendo’s financial report for the quarter ending June 2024 showed a decline in revenue and net profit, with the Nintendo Switch console sales slightly increasing. Future plans include new game releases and theme park attractions.
