Meta has announced that they will not be introducing AI assistant features for users in the European region, following objections from EU regulatory agencies regarding user privacy concerns.
Previously, Meta had informed users in Europe that they would use all publicly shared posts to train AI for Facebook and Instagram, with the option to opt-out. This led regulatory agencies, such as Ireland’s Data Protection Commission (DPC), to investigate. The DPC ordered Meta to halt user data training for AI until further review.
Meta stated that they regretted the misunderstanding and explained that enabling AI features without localized data would result in a diminished user experience compared to other regions. They also expressed concerns about the regression of innovation in the European region, prompting the company to suspend the introduction of AI assistant features for now.
Nevertheless, the DPC expressed satisfaction with the decision to halt data training for Meta’s AI in Europe.
