Ward Christensen, a co-creator of BBS and XMODEM protocol, passed away at the age of 78. BBS, also known as bulletin board system, was a popular online service before the Internet took over. This system relied on users dialing into servers to send messages or chat with others. Because everyone had to dial in, servers could only handle a limited number of online users simultaneously.
Christensen, along with Randy Suess (1945-2019), established the Computerized Bulletin Board System (CBBS) in 1978 to provide a space for computer enthusiasts to interact. They had 12 telephone lines connected and around 300-600 users.
In Thailand, BBS usage was quite widespread in the 1990s.
