Director of Baldur’s Gate 3 Announces Development of DLC, then Cancels, Decides Against Proceeding.

Swen Vincke, the director of Baldur’s Gate 3 and CEO of Larian Studios, revealed at the GDC 2024 game developer conference that his company had started working on additional DLC content for Baldur’s Gate 3. However, after careful consideration, they decided to cancel the DLC and confirmed that there will be no more DLC for this game.

Vincke stated that the success of Baldur’s Gate 3 led the team to begin developing DLC in accordance with industry standards, even considering a follow-up, BG4. However, they realized that the main game was not yet complete, making it inappropriate to start something new at this time. The team’s mindset was not prepared for DLC development, leading to numerous missteps.

After reflecting over the Christmas holidays, Vincke made the decision to forgo DLC and focus on completing BG3 successfully. He plans to pursue other projects with ideas that have been in development since before BG3. He mentioned two games he would like to work on and initially feared the team’s reaction but was surprised by their relieved response, with many thanking him for the decision to stop. The team atmosphere has since become much more positive and cheerful.

Vincke has not disclosed what Larian Studios’ next game project will be but confirmed that it will not be Divinity: Original Sin 3. He stated that the future of Baldur’s Gate 3 depends on Wizards of the Coast, as the owners of the Dungeons & Dragons franchise, and expressed that inviting other studio developers to work on DLC for this game is a possibility. He also noted that converting the latest 5th Edition rules of Dungeons & Dragons into a video game format presents significant challenges.

TLDR: Swen Vincke announced the cancellation of DLC for Baldur’s Gate 3, citing the team’s unpreparedness and the need to focus on completing the main game. The future of BG3 rests with Wizards of the Coast, and Larian Studios may explore collaborations for future DLC projects.
