E-commerce Giant Amazon Reveals Impact of Amazon Q in Upgrading Java for Enhanced Software Efficiency and Significant Time Savings.

Andy Jassy, CEO of Amazon, took to LinkedIn to showcase the capabilities of Amazon’s AI assistant system, Amazon Q. One key selling point for enterprise customers is its ability to debug and support the migration of Java code to newer versions.

According to Jassy, upgrading basic software infrastructure is crucial yet often lacks the motivation for developers, as it doesn’t involve creating anything new. Amazon Q proves valuable by reducing the burden; it assists in upgrading internal program code to accommodate the latest Java versions.

On average, upgrading one application to Java 17 takes about 50 working days for developers. However, with Amazon Q’s aid, this time is reduced to just a few hours. When applied to all applications used by Amazon, this could save up to 4,500 developer-years. At present, Amazon can upgrade more than half of its programs to Java 17, and 79% of the code generated by Amazon Q is directly usable without further modifications.

Amazon estimates that this initiative could save the company up to $260 million annually, showcasing a compelling case for organizations looking to enhance operational efficiency through the use of Amazon Q.

TLDR: Andy Jassy highlights the benefits of Amazon Q in significantly reducing the time and effort required for software upgrades and code maintenance, potentially saving millions for businesses.
