During Build 2023 last year, Microsoft unveiled Dev Home, the developer mode of Windows 11, featuring Dev Drive, which utilizes the ReFS file system from Windows Server instead of NTFS, improving file read/write performance by 30% compared to the original.
In the recent Build 2024, Microsoft has enhanced Dev Drive with a feature called Filesystem Block Cloning, allowing for faster copying of large files. For example, copying a 10GB file originally took almost 8 seconds, but with this feature enabled, it only takes about 641 ms, or roughly 0.7 seconds.
This feature is set to be implemented in Windows 11 24H2, which is expected to be released in the latter half of this year.
