Volkswagen Group is the latest automotive company to announce its support for the Tesla charging standard, officially known as the North American Charging Standard (NACS), in the United States market.
This announcement impacts all brands within the Volkswagen Group, including Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche, and Scout Motors. Starting in 2025, these brands’ vehicles sold in North America will begin using the NACS charging standard. The existing Combined Charging System (CCS) will still be supported.
Car manufacturers in the United States have gradually been transitioning to the NACS plug to ensure compatibility with Tesla charging stations, which have already been widely deployed. Ford led the way in May 2023, followed by GM in June, and other brands such as Honda, Rivian, Mercedes, Hyundai, Kia, Toyota, Subaru, and Lucid. The remaining major automotive conglomerate yet to adopt the NACS standard is Stellantis, the owner of Jeep, Chrysler, and Peugeot.
