Community Health Systems, a healthcare network in the United States, recently experienced a 5-day IT system outage starting from April 23rd. The incident was attributed to an engineer who mistakenly deleted the storage of the Oracle Health database while performing maintenance. Nonetheless, the IT team successfully restored the system in its entirety.
Oracle Health, originally known as Cerner, was acquired by Oracle in 2021, and is an electronic health record (EHR) system used by CHS across 45 hospitals out of their total 72 hospitals within the network. This widespread impact forced staff to revert to paper records temporarily.
Despite the disruption, CHS reassured that uninterrupted and secure services were still provided by staff. Currently, Oracle has successfully recovered the system fully.
