MSI Claw, a portable gaming device, made its debut earlier this year featuring the Intel Core Ultra Series 100 (Meteor Lake) CPU. This release disrupted the norms of other AMD Ryzen-based gaming handhelds. The initial testing of the MSI Claw A1M model did not yield satisfactory results, mainly due to the limitations of the Core Ultra 100 chip.
Recently, MSI is set to redeem itself with the new MSI Claw model upgraded to utilize the Lunar Lake chip from Intel, promising significantly improved performance. The upcoming Claw models will be divided into two versions based on screen size, namely MSI Claw 7 (7″ screen like the first model) and MSI Claw 8 AI+ (8″ screen), both with identical resolutions of 1920×1080 at 120Hz VRR.
In an interview with PC World, Cliff Chun, the MSI executive, revealed that they experimented with various screen sizes ranging from a petite 5″ to a substantial 10″ to determine the most suitable option. Initially, the company believed that a 7″ screen was ideal for the product launch, but feedback from gamers pushed them to release an 8″ version as well.
Apart from upgrading to the Core Ultra Lunar Lake CPU, other improvements include upgrading the RAM to LPDDR5X-8533, adding a second USB-C port, increasing the battery size to 80W (equivalent to the ROG Ally X), redesigning the SSD position for easier access without removing the fan, and changing the exterior color scheme to black and white.
The pricing has not been disclosed yet, with expectations of a release around September 2024.
TLDR: MSI is revamping the Claw handheld gaming device with an upgraded Lunar Lake chip and other enhancements, offering improved performance and a choice between 7″ and 8″ screen sizes. Expected to hit the market in September 2024.
