Google has announced a new update to its Android Studio version release policy. Moving forward, releases will be divided into two categories: platform-driven releases following IntelliJ’s lead and feature-specific releases exclusive to Android Studio.
In 2020, Android Studio shifted to using version numbers aligned with IntelliJ and adopted an animal naming convention. This trend has persisted for the past four years, with the latest stable version being Jellyfish 2023.3.1.
The new policy will take effect in the upcoming version, codenamed Koala. The initial subversion of Koala, denoted by .1, will not introduce any new features but will align with IntelliJ’s internal versioning. Shortly after, Google will release a .2 version as a Feature Drop, incorporating features developed by Google.
Google explains that this approach will allow users to access the latest features of the newest IntelliJ IDE version faster and improve the stability of Android Studio by streamlining the release process. Subsequent feature additions will be made in the .2 version.
