Facebook has introduced Thai language support on the Take It Down platform to protect Thai teenagers from falling victim to threatening to share nude photos. They have collaborated with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) and partners in Thailand, including the Thailand Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force (TICAC) and HUG Thailand project.
Meta has disclosed statistics on crimes involving child sexual exploitation from October to December 2023 and has removed content violating rules and related to seeking sexual benefits from children worldwide, totaling over 16 million pieces on Facebook and 2.1 million pieces on Instagram. More than 98% of the content violating these rules involved child pornography.
In Thailand in 2023, there were over 540 cases leading to arrests and prosecutions due to increased online child exposure. Crimes included deceiving children to take photos in exchange for money or victims being blackmailed with photos after relationships end.
Take It Down is a free service that allows users to remove online nude images, partially nude images, or non-consensual images of themselves taken before the age of 18. The service is available for free for:
– Children and teenagers under 18 who are concerned that their private images have been or may be shared online
– Parents or trusted adults to handle private images on behalf of children and teenagers
– Adults worried that their images taken before the age of 18 are shared online
To access the service, visit TakeItDown.NCMEC.org, answer a few short questions, and select images or videos on the device that you feel may be online. Take It Down will assign a unique digital fingerprint called a “hash value” to the images or videos, which will be shared with participating online platforms like Meta to check for presence and take down or block the media. This whole process does not remove images or videos from the device and is confidential.
