Google Photos offers users the option to upload images in two different settings: preserving the original quality (Original) or uploading in a space-saving format (Storage Saver). However, in some cases, even when users choose Storage Saver, Google Photos does not compress images to reduce storage space.
Google has announced a small update to assist users in checking on this issue. Users can now view whether a photo or video is stored in Storage Saver format by selecting the specific image, swiping up, and checking the Details section. If the photo is not stored in Storage Saver format, there will be a confirmation message stating “Not eligible for Storage saver.”
Google Photos does not support compression for various image file types, such as Multi-Picture Format (MPF) containing multiple layered JPEG images or Portrait images captured on Android with a resolution exceeding 16MP.

TLDR: Google Photos now allows users to easily check if their images are stored in Storage Saver format, with a confirmation message for those not eligible for compression.
