Enhancing Player Engagement: Steam Introduces In-Game Alerts for Long-Abandoned Early Access Games

Steam has introduced a new feature to notify players that games in Early Access have not been updated by developers for an extended period of time.

Currently on the Steam website, for games available to play during development or Early Access, players must understand the risk that the game may be abandoned. There have been instances where players have paid for Early Access only to have developers disappear (for whatever reason).

A prominent example is Kerbal Space Program 2, where the parent company, Take-Two, sold the publishing team Private Division and disbanded the development team (resulting in overwhelmingly negative reviews on Steam).

To address this issue, Steam has added additional warnings on the website. For example, the game Cavern Kings now has a message stating that the developers have not updated the game for over 8 years.

In the case of Kerbal Space Program 2, with no updates for 13 months, there has not been a similar warning. It remains unclear how long a game must go without updates for Steam to display a warning.

TLDR: Steam now notifies players when games in Early Access have not been updated for an extended period, aiming to increase transparency and prevent player disappointment.
