Enhancing Rainfall Forecast in Africa with Google’s AI Technology to Replace Limited Radar Stations

Google has enhanced its weather forecasting data to include rainfall information for users in Africa via Google Search with increased accuracy by utilizing the MetNet artificial intelligence model along with satellite data to address radar rainfall measurements that are not encompassing enough in the African continent.

There are only 37 radar stations measuring rainfall amounts across Africa compared to North America, which has 291 stations, leading to less accurate rainfall forecasts in the region in the past.

The MetNet model can accurately predict rainfall amounts within a 5-kilometer radius for users every 15 minutes within a 12-hour timeframe, with all processing taking just 1 minute.
