Ephemeral Aesthetic Deterioration: Devaluing Videos with Limited Views on Instagram

Users of Instagram may have wondered why recently uploaded videos lack sharpness, or in some cases, older posts’ quality seems to have deteriorated. However, some individuals manage to present exceptionally clear clips.

Adam Mosseri, the head of the Instagram team, addressed this issue in his statement, mentioning that Instagram typically strives to showcase the highest quality videos possible. Yet, if a video remains unwatched for a while, its quality will be reduced. However, upon receiving a high volume of views upon return, these videos will be re-rendered for improved clarity.

Mosseri further elaborated on this matter in Threads, following someone reposting his response, indicating that this enhancement occurs at a holistic level, rather than being specific to individual users. Popular videos receive more processing resources (CPU, storage) to achieve maximum clarity, emphasizing that this process is not a universal enhancement but rather operates on a scalable basis.

An ensuing query raised whether this would disadvantage content creators with fewer followers, as their videos may not always be of high quality. Mosseri clarified that video quality is not the sole factor determining viewers’ interest; the video’s content holds greater significance.

TLDR: Instagram adjusts video quality based on viewership, allocating more resources to popular videos for enhanced clarity, with content playing a significant role in user engagement.
