The European Commission (EC), a body within the European Union (EU), has issued a fine of 1.8 billion euros (approximately 70 billion baht) to Apple for engaging in anti-competitive practices in the music streaming app market on the App Store for iPhone and iPad users.
Previously, there were rumors that the EC would fine Apple around 500 million euros. The official figure is significantly higher than anticipated.
In their statement, the EC stated that Apple restricted developers from informing users about alternative payment methods outside of the app, which violates EU competition laws.
This decision stems from a complaint filed by Spotify since 2019, where the EC criticized Apple’s behavior over the past decade, resulting in excessive charges for iOS users due to Apple’s commission fees. These findings were used to determine the fine.
