European Commission Prepares to Impose €500 Million Fine on Apple for Anti-competitive Practices in Music Streaming Sector

Report from The Financial Times states that the European Commission (EC) is preparing to issue a fine of 500 million euros against Apple for antitrust issues that Spotify complained about in 2019.

The complaint alleges that Apple has been obstructing other streaming music services, such as Spotify, by not allowing them to inform customers about alternative payment methods besides using the In-App channel, through which Apple takes a percentage of the fees. This approach creates unfair competition with Apple’s own streaming music service, Apple Music.

In addition to the fine, EC’s directive to Apple will include allowing music platforms to insert links to alternative payment methods outside of the In-App system.

The report indicates that EC will formally announce its decision within the coming weeks.
