The European Commission, also known as EC, has ruled that X does not meet the criteria to be regulated under the Digital Markets Act (DMA). This legislation aims to regulate large technology companies with a significant user base.
The criteria under the DMA will affect large platforms known as “gatekeepers” that have a substantial number of users in the European Union or impact business customers. Current social platforms that fall under this criteria include Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok.
After receiving detailed explanations from X, the EC found that the platform does not meet the DMA criteria as it is not a significant channel for businesses to communicate or reach customers. The EC will continue to monitor any future changes.
The conditions for a platform to be classified as a large platform under the DMA are having over 45 million users and more than 10,000 business customers.
