The European Commission (EC) has announced that Temu, an online shopping platform, has been classified as a Very Large Online Platform (VLOP) and must comply with additional regulations under the Digital Services Act (DSA) for managing inappropriate content and disclosing algorithms used for content curation.
Criteria under the DSA for VLOP classification stipulate that the platform must have more than 45 million users in the European Union. Current platforms meeting these criteria include tech giants such as Amazon, Apple, Booking.com, Google, LinkedIn, Meta, Microsoft, Pinterest, Snap, TikTok, and others catering to a large audience. Previously, Chinese e-commerce companies like AliExpress and Shein were also included.
A spokesperson for Temu stated that the company accepts the EC’s decision to classify them as a large platform under the DSA, and they are prepared to comply with the additional requirements.
