Moonshot project of Alphabet, the parent company of Google, X (not a social network), has announced that its Heritable Agriculture project will be spun off as an independent company from X, with investments from FTW Ventures, Mythos Ventures, and SVG Ventures.
Heritable Agriculture is a startup founded on the concept of improving agriculture to be more sustainable for the planet. While plants are beneficial for the environment, current industrial farming practices have adverse impacts. They occupy nearly half of arable land, emit 1 in 4 greenhouse gases, and deplete groundwater by up to 70%.
Heritable Architecture utilizes data gathering and plant analysis through Machine Learning to enhance plant genetics to be more eco-friendly. This results in higher yields, reduced water usage, increased soil carbon sequestration, among other benefits. The company achieves this without genetic modification but through crossbreeding for superior outcomes. Currently, the company aims to commercialize this initiative by expanding collaborations with business partners.
TLDR: Alphabet’s X spinoff, Heritable Agriculture, aims to revolutionize agriculture through eco-friendly plant genetics using data analysis and Machine Learning techniques.
