Waymo, a self-driving car company under Alphabet, has announced that its services in San Francisco are now open to everyone. Previously, individuals had to express interest and wait to be approved from the waitlist before they could start using Waymo’s services.
According to Waymo, over 300,000 people in San Francisco have shown interest in joining the waitlist, which accounts for approximately one-fourth of the city’s population. The latest figure of individuals on the waitlist is in the hundreds. This prompted Waymo to make the decision to open up the service to everyone.
Waymo has also revealed statistics on the services provided in San Francisco. Thirty percent of ride requests were for travel to business establishments or shops, stimulating the local economy. Thirty-six percent of ride requests were for travel to other public transportation hubs. In comparison to using human drivers, the number of accidents has decreased by 78% for the same distance traveled.
Currently, Waymo has around 300 self-driving cars servicing San Francisco and operates commercially in other cities such as Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Austin.
