President Joko Widodo of Indonesia has issued a decree banning central and regional government agencies from creating additional apps, as the proliferation of separate apps has resulted in over 27,000 apps currently in existence. Widodo pointed out that the problem with these apps is their lack of interoperability, with many apps overlapping in functionality, costing a hefty annual budget of 6.2 trillion rupiah (approximately 14 billion baht). Moving forward, app development should prioritize user satisfaction and ease of transactions.
This policy of prohibiting new app development accompanies the establishment of GovTech INA Digital, a central agency tasked with integrating public services. Education, healthcare, business licensing, and taxation services will be the initial focus areas, with other services to follow gradually.
