JetBrains, in collaboration with the Python Software Foundation, has released the findings of the 2023 Python developer survey, marking the 7th annual survey conducted from November 2023 to February 2024, with over 25,000 Python developers participating.
The survey revealed several interesting points, such as inquiries about Python 2, the final version of which was released in 2020 and has since reached end-of-life status. It was found that 6% of developers still use Python 2, with more than half of them being under 21 years old. Interestingly, one in three developers are students, possibly due to courses still utilizing Python 2, while 75% are using the latest Python 3 versions.
Other noteworthy findings include:
– Operating Systems: Linux has now surpassed Windows with a usage rate of 55%.
– Popular IDE: Visual Studio Code is the leading IDE at 41%, followed by PyCharm. A majority of developers use at least two different IDEs, with only 23% using a single IDE.
– Community Involvement: 37% of respondents reported contributing to open-source community projects in the past year, primarily related to coding.
