Extending Ubuntu LTS Support to 12 Years Back to 14.04: A Closer Look at Canonical’s Payment Requirement

Canonical has announced an extension of support for Ubuntu LTS versions from the original maximum of 10 years to 12 years. The LTS support structure is as follows:

Free Usage: Canonical will update security patches for LTS in the main package for up to 5 years, as usual.

Ubuntu Pro: By subscribing to Ubuntu Pro, users will receive support for main/universe for an additional 5 years, totaling 10 years.

Legacy Support, the new addition announced, is an add-on available for Ubuntu Pro members, extending support for an extra 2 years, totaling to 12 years.

Canonical recognizes the complexity involved in upgrading operating system versions. Therefore, enterprise customers often prefer to stick with the same OS for an extended period, prompting Canonical to offer longer support durations. This led to the introduction of the Legacy Support package, adding 2 more years of support.

Notably, the package allows a backward extension to Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, which is reaching its 10-year support mark in April 2024. This means users can continue using it for an additional 2 years with the willingness to pay extra.

The pricing for Ubuntu Pro standard version stands at $25 per device per year (desktop) and $500 per device per year (server). The pricing for the Legacy Support package has not been publicly disclosed.
