The legend of “selling spaceships” continues with the space combat game Star Citizen by Cloud Imperium, which began development in 2012 and has spanned across decades. The project aims to release its first game installment called Squadron 42 by 2026 (just a goal, mind you).
The slow progress of the game isn’t much of an issue as Star Citizen has revolutionized the business model through crowdfunding. Backers receive spaceships, skins, and various in-game accessories as rewards. With over $400 million raised in 2021, $600 million in 2023, and currently sitting at a whopping $750 million in crowdfunding, with over 5.44 million accounts contributing. Just in the past week alone, a staggering $5 million was raised.
Cloud Imperium has also showcased gameplay trailers for Squadron 42, giving fans a glimpse into the first hour of the game.
