Farewell to Tango Gameworks: Shinji Mikami Opens New Kamuy Studio to Break Away from Horror Game Norms

Shinji Mikami, the father of the Resident Evil game series, recently parted ways with Tango Gameworks under Bethesda’s umbrella last year and has just established his own studio called Kamuy. Mikami sat down for an interview with Japan’s Byking channel to explain why he left Tango Gameworks, which he founded in 2010 (and sold to Bethesda/ZeniMax in the same year after being open for around 6 months), citing the pressures of managing a large studio as the main reason.

Upon taking on the role of CEO at Tango Gameworks in the first 6 months, he found that others expected him to be a brilliant manager and a company representative, but he personally felt like just an ordinary employee. Despite the title of “game producer” attached to his name, he didn’t see himself as a manager. Mikami revealed that he had intended to leave Tango for up to 8 years prior but only recently made the decision to do so because he felt the need to see through the old game projects and was becoming tired of survival horror games (Tango’s initial game series being The Evil Within) and wanted to try his hand at creating new types of games. He saw an opportunity to pave the way for new game developers to grow and noticed a market for smaller-sized games. This led to the creation of the new studio Kamuy.
