Yoshinori Kitase has recently given an interview to Eurogamer regarding the upcoming release of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Part of the interview touched on a previous topic where Kitase spoke to French YouTubers about the possibility of remaking FFVI. He mentioned that if they were to remake FFVI, it might take twice as long as FFVII to complete all the parts. Eurogamer then asked Kitase if it’s possible to remake Final Fantasy VI on a smaller scale, such as using the 2D-HD art style from Octopath Traveler.
In response, Kitase stated that if the internal development team wanted to use that style (2D-HD) or any other style they felt suited the game and was something the fans would like to see, he believed it was possible and he personally would like to see it too.
However, Kitase further explained that the remake of FFVII is a separate endeavor from the main series. Although the FFVII Remake has been successful, it does not mean that Square Enix will automatically remake every game in the series alongside creating new installments.
TLDR: Yoshinori Kitase discusses the potential remake of Final Fantasy VI, stating that if the development team wants to use the 2D-HD art style or any other style that suits the game and pleases the fans, it could be possible. However, he clarifies that the FFVII Remake is a separate project from the main series, and the success of the remake does not guarantee remakes for every game in the series.
