FIDO Alliance Introduces Passkey Standard for Seamless Key Sharing, Effortlessly Transfer Keys to Other Password Manager Apps

The authentication method using Passkey, which involves storing encrypted key pairs on a device, has been gaining popularity since its introduction in early 2023. Numerous online services have announced full support for Passkey authentication.

However, a significant issue with Passkey is key synchronization across devices or different login management software from various brands, as there is no universal standard in place to address this.

The FIDO Alliance, as a driving force behind Passkey authentication, has introduced the Credential Exchange Protocol (CXP) and Credential Exchange Format (CXF). These protocols and formats facilitate the exchange of Passkey keys between different software platforms.

Currently, the CXP and CXF specifications are in draft form for feedback, but leading tech giants and password management apps like 1Password, Apple, Bitwarden, Dashlane, Enpass, Google, Microsoft, NordPass, Okta, Samsung, and SK Telecom have already included plans to support these initiatives. This means that once the CXP/CXF implementation is complete, users can switch between these platforms seamlessly with their Passkey keys.

TLDR: Passkey authentication is gaining popularity, but key synchronization remains a challenge. FIDO Alliance’s latest protocols aim to make Passkey key exchange between software platforms more seamless. Leading companies are already planning to support these initiatives.
