Last week, Figma announced several new features, including a fresh UI design and AI capabilities to assist in designing through Make Design, which generates results based on input prompts. However, Figma decided to temporarily shut down the Make Design feature due to encountered issues.
The issue arose when Andy Allen, founder of NotBoring Software, posted about using the Make Design feature in Figma to design a weather data app. After entering commands three times, he noticed that the results consistently resembled the Weather app in iOS, down to the data positioning, icons, and finer details. He suspected Figma was training data by referencing real apps as a basis.
Figma’s CEO, Dylan Field, dismissed these claims, confirming that Figma’s AI is not trained on Figma content, community files, or existing apps. However, he acknowledged that the diversity of training data sources may have led to similar results. Field admitted that the rushed timeline for releasing the feature may have overlooked software bugs or issues, prompting the temporary closure for further testing to ensure the desired results before relaunching.
TLDR: Figma introduced new features but temporarily shut down Make Design due to potential data training issues, conducting further tests before reopening. Dylan Field clarified that Figma’s AI is not trained on Figma content or existing apps.
