Beeks Group, a UK-based IT service provider, revealed in its annual financial report that the company has shifted from VMware to OpenNebula, an open-source cloud management software. This move was prompted by a decrease in cloud profitability due to rising software licensing costs. Beeks stated that the price hike is temporary and will decrease in the future. OpenNebula is a cloud service platform that supports KVM, LXC, and vCenter in the background.
The migration process was not without its challenges as Beeks had its own software connected to VMware’s API, which needed rewriting to support OpenNebula. Moreover, not all customers were on board with the switch, as some preferred to continue using VMware directly. Despite this, Beeks successfully migrated nearly all of its 3,000 servers and over 20,000 VMs to OpenNebula, allowing for more efficient server resource utilization.
