Former team driver Nouveau relocates to NVIDIA to improve Linux drivers

Ben Skeggs, a former team lead for the Nouveau open-source driver development team, recently made the switch from Red Hat to NVIDIA in April 2024. After a period of silence, he emerged to announce that NVIDIA would be finding ways to better support GPU drivers on Linux.

A crucial aspect of addressing driver issues on Linux is the new open-source driver project, Nova, developed by the Red Hat team and written in Rust. The project aims to support the architecture of NVIDIA GPU System Processor (GSP) used in newer GPUs like the GeForce RTX Series 20 (Turing) and beyond.

The concept of GSP involves separating the core functionality of the GPU from the DRM driver, a common issue in the open-source world. The introduction of the Nova project aligns well with NVIDIA’s goals. Skeggs’s move to NVIDIA, coupled with projects like Nova, signifies a positive future collaboration between the Linux community and NVIDIA.

TLDR: Ben Skeggs joined NVIDIA from Red Hat to enhance support for GPU drivers on Linux through the Nova project, signaling a promising partnership between the two entities.
