Game Informer, a gaming magazine and website, has announced its permanent closure after being in operation since 1991 (33 years ago).
Originating as a newsletter for FuncoLand, a game store back in the day, Game Informer evolved into a monthly gaming magazine. However, with the decline of FuncoLand’s business in the late 90s, it was sold to Barnes & Noble, who merged FuncoLand with Babbage’s, a software retailer, and rebranded it as GameStop.
In 2002, GameStop separated from Barnes & Noble and became a publicly traded company. The current owner of Game Informer is still GameStop, which has been facing challenges due to the shifting trend towards digital game purchases.
Game Informer is one of the few remaining print gaming magazines, with its last issue featuring The Casting of Frank Stone, a game by Supermassive Games (connected to Dead by Daylight). The magazine has ceased publication, and all old content on the website has been removed, along with the dismissal of all employees.
TLDR: Game Informer, a long-standing gaming magazine, has closed its doors after being a part of the gaming industry for over three decades.
