Game of Thrones Author and Fiction Writers Consortium Accuse OpenAI of Copyright Infringement in AI Training Lawsuit

A renowned group of 17 novelists, in collaboration with the Authors Guild, has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, accusing them of copyright infringement for using their works to train AI without permission. The list of prominent authors participating in the lawsuit includes George R. R. Martin, the author of Game of Thrones, John Grisham, Guild President Scott Turow, and Jodi Picoult, among others. The lawsuit alleges that OpenAI utilized the writings without obtaining the necessary authorization, resulting in the AI being able to summarize, mimic, and modify the works of these authors, thereby impacting their earnings.

In response, OpenAI has expressed its respect for the authors’ decision and has stated that they are committed to engaging in conversations and fostering understanding with writers worldwide, with the aim of finding ways to collaborate effectively.

This is not the first case in which OpenAI has faced a lawsuit from authors, as there have been previous instances of similar nature.
