GEICO Auto Insurance Company Shifts Away from VMware to Embrace OpenStack Technology

The Register reports that they have seen documents from the Open Infrastructure Foundation (the new name of the OpenStack Foundation after accepting other projects) stating that GEICO, an auto insurance company in the United States (with a gecko logo if you’ve seen the ads), is in the process of transitioning its IT systems from VMware to OpenStack.

According to the document, Tad Van Fleet, a member of GEICO’s system architecture team, mentioned that the shift from VMware to OpenStack is motivated by the desire to avoid vendor lock-in, allowing the company to customize its IT systems as needed and integrate with other open-source tools, something that was not feasible in the VMware era.

While GEICO has declined to comment on this document, job postings for OpenStack-related positions can be found on their website, with 25 positions currently available.

The change in VMware’s policies under new owner Broadcom has prompted many organizational customers to start migrating to other software solutions such as Proxmox and Nutanix AHV.

TLDR: GEICO is making the switch from VMware to OpenStack to avoid vendor lock-in and gain more flexibility in customizing and integrating their IT systems, reflecting a broader trend of customers moving away from VMware due to policy changes under new ownership.
