Gemini introduces automatic feature code execution for free computation without additional charges

Gemini API has announced a significant new feature – the ability to code in Python within the API itself when users submit queries that require calculations, such as word counting or summing numbers from a table. With the code execution feature, users can opt to run their own code while calling the API. When a query necessitating calculation is received, Gemini will generate the code and send it to run on Google’s servers before returning the final message to the user.

Python on Google’s servers is equipped with NumPy and SymPy installed, but additional modules cannot be added. This feature brings Gemini closer to OpenAI after OpenAI launched the Assistant API that can run code similarly since late 2023. The competitive edge of Gemini lies in its offer of free Python code execution compared to OpenAI, which charges $0.03 per run, roughly equivalent to 1 baht. Following the introduction of this feature, users will incur token-based fees for usage as before.

TLDR: Gemini API now allows users to execute Python code within the API for calculations, creating a cost-effective solution compared to competitors like OpenAI.
