Scams via telephone calls, known as “scam calls,” are not limited to Thailand. Recently, Google announced the addition of the Scam Detection feature powered by AI for Android smartphones and Pixel, as showcased at Google I/O 2024.
Google’s approach differs from traditional methods of blocking phone numbers on a blacklist. Using AI, Google intercepts and analyzes real-time conversations on-device to determine if they are scams.
In Google Messages on Android, the Scam SMS/MMS/RCS feature utilizes AI to scan chat conversations with unknown contacts (those not in our address book). If a conversation is flagged as a potential scam, the app notifies the user and recommends blocking the conversation immediately.
This feature is currently available in English for users in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada, with other countries to follow suit.
The Scam Call feature is an exclusive feature of Pixel phones that uses AI to listen to live conversations and alert users if they are being asked to send money. For Pixel 6 and above, machine learning models are used, while Pixel 9 utilizes the advanced Gemini Nano model.
This feature is gradually being rolled out to Pixel users in the US and must be manually activated in the Phone by Google app.
TLDR: Google introduces Scam Detection feature using AI for Android and Pixel devices to identify and block potential scam calls and messages in real-time, enhancing user security.
