The spotlight at last night’s Google I/O 2024 Keynote was solely on AI, marking a departure from Google’s tradition of unveiling new things in Android 15 on the main stage. With just a single slide showing that Android 15 Beta 2 will be available for download tomorrow, the main stage was dedicated solely to showcasing Android’s AI features, with no mention of the operating system itself. Additionally, Google made announcements regarding new features of Android 15 and development tools on other stages at Google I/O, as well as through web pages and social media channels (more details to follow in separate reports).
Aside from the dominance of AI features stealing the show, Google’s strategy of separating the core of the Android operating system into quarterly feature updates is another reason for the decreasing significance of the Android operating system itself at Google I/O events.

TLDR: The focus of Google I/O 2024 Keynote was entirely on AI, relegating Android 15 to a secondary stage and marking a shift in Google’s approach to operating system updates.
