Google Maps for Android now supports the use of Bluetooth Beacons for indoor navigation in places with GPS limitations. This GPS signal limitation also affects Waze, a Google-owned company that provides a similar navigation mapping system. In order to overcome the GPS signal limitation, Waze has implemented the Waze Beacon, a device that is placed inside tunnels to provide directions in complex routes (such as interchanges within tunnels). This technology has been implemented in various major cities worldwide, including New York, Chicago, Paris, Sydney, and Boston, for installation in tunnels.
The Waze app has been supporting this feature for quite some time, prompting drivers to enable Bluetooth in order to utilize this feature. Recently, Google Maps has also introduced a similar feature.
For those interested in activating this feature, go to Settings > Navigation Settings > Driving Options. Upon checking my own device, I found that this feature is already available.
TLDR: Google Maps for Android now supports Bluetooth Beacons for indoor navigation in GPS-limited areas. Waze has already been using a similar technology called Waze Beacon, which is installed in tunnels. Users can activate this feature by going to Settings > Navigation Settings > Driving Options.
