Google Maps Timeline is a feature that has been quite useful for a long time, whether it’s for tracking where you’ve been, for your spouse, partner, or even just reminiscing about your own timeline during the recent COVID period. Google has announced that they will remove the Timeline feature from the web version and it will only be available in the app. This change aims to give users more control over their data, as the information will be directly saved on the user’s device instead of Google’s servers.
Users of Timeline will receive notifications through the app or email to keep their data on their smartphones instead of on the cloud (and still have the option to backup and store old data using the auto delete option on the app). There is a deadline for transferring data by December 1st. If not transferred, Google will also provide the option to keep data for the last 90 days on the first device logged into the Google account.
To continue using Timeline on the Google Maps app, users must update to version 11.106 on Android and 6.93 on iOS.
