In the latest organizational restructuring announcement from Google, aside from merging the Android/Chrome software team with the hardware team into Platforms and Devices, there were also changes on the AI front.
This transformation stems from the merger of the Google Brain team with DeepMind a year ago, leading to the formation of Google DeepMind. Google reorganized other AI-related teams under Google DeepMind as follows:
Google Research merged its AI model-related team with Google DeepMind to unify and streamline model creation based on a shared processing resource. This change will allow Google Research to refocus on fundamental research in three main areas: quantum computing, fundamental algorithm and machine learning research, and research application and societal impact.
Responsible AI was also moved from Google Research to Google DeepMind. Other responsibility-related functions were consolidated under the Trust and Safety team at the company’s core.
Google also standardized AI feature testing processes across the company and invested in a “red team” dedicated to uncovering system vulnerabilities.
TLDR: Google announced a restructuring plan, combining software, hardware, and AI teams, including Google Brain and DeepMind, to enhance research and accountability.
