Google has announced a deal to purchase nuclear energy from Kairos Power, a startup developing nuclear power systems with small reactors. This electricity will be used for Google’s AI data centers.
As per the agreement, Kairos Power will start producing electricity with their first reactor set in 2030, and expand it to a total power capacity of 500 megawatts by 2035. This energy is carbon-neutral.
Kairos Power utilizes advanced nuclear energy production technology that does not require the construction of large nuclear power plants we are familiar with. They utilize molten salt combined with ceramics for cooling instead of traditional water systems. This results in a low-pressure nuclear system and smaller reactor sizes. The first nuclear plant is currently in the approval process by regulatory agencies and the state of Tennessee.
This deal makes Google the latest company to address the electricity needs for data centers, especially those focused on AI, by either purchasing or entering into agreements with nuclear power plants. Previously, both Amazon and Microsoft have made similar moves with nuclear power plants to produce electricity.
