Google teams up with HP to commercialize Project Starline for online conferencing, launching in 2025.

Google has announced the launch of Project Starline, a booth for virtual video conferencing that aims to create a lifelike meeting experience, as though participants are truly sitting and conversing face-to-face. This innovative product is being developed for commercial sale in collaboration with HP, known for their online meeting business Poly, with plans to release the product in 2025.

Debuting in 2021 during the COVID pandemic, Project Starline was developed by Google to enhance the virtual meeting experience by utilizing 3D camera technology that measures depth and large display screens to show life-sized participants during conversations.

Google reported positive test results using Project Starline in their own offices and partner companies, with participants showing increased engagement and better retention of meeting content. Meetings conducted through Starline felt more human, fostering increased interaction among participants.

Starline’s system will support popular meeting software such as Google Meet and Zoom, with HP’s Poly team contributing to the development of the commercial product.
