Google has released the Pixel Feature Drop for June 2024, with a significant change being the discontinuation of running the Gemini Nano model exclusively on the Pixel 8 Pro. Both the standard Pixel 8 and the budget-friendly Pixel 8a, which have recently been released, will now be able to run Gemini Nano on-device (all three models use the same Tensor G3). Currently, users still need to enable it themselves through the Developer Options.
The discontinuation allows the Pixel 8, 8 Pro, and 8a to utilize the feature of summarizing voice to text from the Recorder app seamlessly. Google has also improved the transcription feature to distinguish names within the voice accurately and export transcripts as text files or directly to Google Docs instantly.
Other new non-AI-related features include the ability for the Pixel 8, 8 Pro, and 8a to connect to a monitor via USB-C (the hope of Desktop Mode making a comeback), Find My Device supporting offline operations even when the device is turned off or the battery is dead, the Pixel Camera adding a feature to detect eye closure while working with HDR+ mode (available for Pixel 6 and above), the Pixel Camera allowing users to choose their own lens type (ultra-wide, wide, or telephoto) for the Pixel 6 Pro and above, and the phone app adding a Lookup feature to identify unknown numbers, such as those from a shipping company notifying the delivery schedule.
