Government Agency Identifies Pegasus Software Usage Linked to Thai State Entities; Calls for Oversight and Regulation.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) stated that after receiving complaints regarding the hacking of devices with Pegasus malware, and upon reviewing the information, they believe that the complainants were indeed hacked by this malware. Coupled with information on the procurement of similar malware by a government agency, it is impossible to deny the potential involvement of the state agency.

The NHRC itself does not have direct investigative authority but will make recommendations to the Cabinet to initiate an investigation into the use of this malware, potentially outside the legal framework. Additionally, there will be considerations on drafting laws or regulations to control the use of similar malware.

Incidents of hacking into individuals’ iOS devices globally were exposed by Citizen Lab in 2022, identifying a server named “NSB” using the email ” [sensor].nsb18@gmail.com” and Facebook name “Nsbtest Nsbtest”. Furthermore, the Narcotics Suppression Bureau (NSB) requested a budget allocation in 2022 to purchase similar malware.
