Government of India Not Confirming: Directing Apple and Google to Pre-Install State App on Smartphones Sold in the Country as Default

Reports indicate that the Ministry of Technology in India has informed Apple and Google to include government apps in the Gov.in app suite in their stores. Currently, these apps are available for download separately, allowing users to access all apps at once without encountering security alerts.

However, there are additional reports stating that the government has also requested both Apple and Google to pre-install this government app suite on smartphones sold in India. Google, holding a 90% share of Android in India, has yet to respond, while Apple is waiting for it to become a legal requirement. Representatives from the Indian government, Google, and Apple have not commented on this news.

The pre-installation of government apps on phones is not a new concept. In 2021, Apple added a recommended government apps page for phones sold in Russia upon the initial setup, following a law passed in 2019.

TLDR: The Indian government has requested Apple and Google to include government apps in their stores’ Gov.in app suite and to pre-install these apps on smartphones sold in India, with responses pending from both tech giants.
